You may have noticed my last post was from May. I’ve taken on more responsibility at work, and while I LOVE my new job, it means I haven’t had as much free time. So, I’m not going to be making many cakes any more. I still love cake and love making cakes, and I’ll still post them when I make them. You can still write and ask for a cake, but I’m just going to make them for friends and family, and only when I have time. Thanks for all of you who have been so encouraging and supportive!
I Want Cake… September 27, 2010
When it Rains…. May 14, 2010
The past few weeks have been crazy cake making weeks! It’s so funny to go months without a cake and then have a ton all at once. Here are the projects that have kept me busy.
First up: Barbie! These Barbie cupcakes and smash cake were for my friends’ daughter’s birthday!
My wonderful husband made this buttercream transfer of Barbie. It took him two hours of painstaking work! Unfortunately, the picture I traced had one eye slightly bigger than the other, which was exaggerated when he traced it. We call her “Zombie Eyed Barbie.” Also, that’s a colar bone, not cleavage. Please don’t submit me to cake wrecks.
This next cake was a collaboration between me, my husband, and my mother-in-law for my husband’s aunt and uncle’s 40th wedding anniversary. (Did you catch all that? There’s a quiz later.) We tried to make it similar to her wedding cake and colors on a much smaller scale. My mother-in-law made all those roses!
Up next, remember the Cubscakes? Someone wanted Cubs and Bulls cupcakes for a surprise birthday party!
This is a little smash cake I made for my friend’s daughter’s second birthday! She loves the PBS character Caillou and wanted his face on a cake. Easiest character ever!
Finally, I had a spiderman themed order for my friend Oliver’s THIRD birthday. That’s right, third. Notice the big TWO on top of the cake? I think the frosting was going to my head. I did fix it before the party, I just forgot to take a picture.
Pretty Pink Princess Cake April 6, 2010
This cake was for a little girl’s first birthday. I based the design off the invitations and the crown that the grandma wanted on top. (Don’t worry, there is parchment under those feathers to keep them out of the frosting!) I used a ruffle tip for the first time on the bottom border, which I think turned out really cute!
I’m cheating… February 20, 2010
I usually don’t post pictures of a cake until after the cake has been admired and eaten, but today I can’t resist! I’m really happy with how this cake turned out!
It’s for our friends’ daughter’s third birthday party this afternoon. She loves pink and her party dress is going to be black with white polka dots, so her mom wanted something with that color scheme. The inside is rainbow. I hope they like it!
Update: The birthday girl kept greeting party guests with, “Come see my cake! It’s pink!” I think she liked it.
Monogram Cake February 20, 2010
Remember the post, “Cakes on a Plane”? (Still my favorite post title ever!) The woman who wanted that cake for her daughter came back and wanted the same cake for her friend’s birthday. I think it’s the first time I’ve repeated a cake design!
Superhero Cake! January 30, 2010
I don’t usually like to copy people’s cake designs, but when a girl from our church youth group sent me this picture for her 16th birthday, I had to say yes! I did make some small changes. For one, the bottom (Spiderman) layer is a GIANT COOKIE! Overall, I think this may be my favorite cake I’ve made yet!
Eighth Birthday Cake January 30, 2010
My friend Laelle turned eight last week, and she had a very particular design in mind. Her party was black and white with blue accents, and all the party guests were asked to wear dresses. (How adorable is that?) The flowers and vines were straight from her drawing of what she wanted on the cake. I think I might have to hire her to help design cakes in the future!
Two “old” cakes January 30, 2010
These are two cakes I made over the past few months. One was around Thanksgiving, the second was for a Christmas dinner at church.
A Post About Not Posting January 21, 2010
Tonight I went to a seminar for my day job all about social networking, which included blogging. It reminded me of how badly I’ve neglected this site! Things slowed down significantly over the holidays, but I did have a few cakes that I haven’t posted yet. Plus, as I type, I have a birthday cake in the oven for this weekend. So stay tuned for pictures and posts next week!
